The Bet Shira Blowfish
Who are we???
Tough Question... Lets see if i can answer that one...
The Bet Shira Blowfish (AKA Bet Shira Youth Department) is an extension of a much larger entity known as Bet Shira Congregation. Bet Shira Congregation is a Conservative synagogue located in South Miami, Florida. With a membership base of 500 it is Bet Shira's objective to serve as wide a variety of age groups as possible. The Blowfish serve those between 3rd and 12th grades.
The Blowfish meet on a regular schedule and have three equally important missions to accomplish in our meeting with our Youth, those include:
1: Social Programming
2: Religious Education
3: Social Action - Tikun Olam (AKA T.O.)
With such a wide age range being served we have three great programs for all age groups. Those programs are Yachad, Kadima, and of course USY (AKA United Synagogue Youth).
Yachad, our youngest of the three groups is designed for 3rd through 5th grade students. Yachad meets bi-monthly (twice each month) for some awesome programs. This group's events are planned and executed by the wonderful Blowfish staff at Bet Shira.
Kadima, our middle school group (6th-8th grades) and meets typically on a weekly basis here at Bet Shira on Wednesday's from 6:30-8:30PM. The programs for Kadima are planned out by a Kadima Board which consists of Students in 6th - 8th grades who were voted into their position by their peers. The programs are run by both the Kadimaniks as well as our Blowfish staff. Throughout the year Kadima also has Regional and subregional events which take them all over Florida.
USY, our high school program meets typically on a weekly basis as well here at Bet Shira on Thursday evenings from 7-9PM. Similar to Kadima all USY programs are planned by a USY Board which consists of Students in high school who were voted into their positions by their peers. The BIG difference is that all USY programs are run strictly by the Youth in the program. The Blowfish staff attends all meetings but serve only to assist the USY members in programming and to maintain a safe environment.
